MEMBERSHIP

In 2020, the way our community connected changed significantly. Where previously in-person meetings played a central role, this was much reduced after mid-March 2020.

The Covid-19 pandemic accelerated our online connection with the EAGE membership – building on our earlier experiences with online conferencing, community building and online education.

With members active in over 118 countries, we are a truly global association and well positioned for the challenges ahead!

Community

Our members are more than just statistics though; they are also a community. And our community is always growing, sometimes with whole new groups. In 2020 our network of Local Chapters, Student Chapters and Special interest Communities welcomed three new technical groups:

SUCCESS STORIES

Here are some of the success stories from 2020 from our regions and departments. These success stories reflect our meetings, big and small, and examplify some of the diversity and resilience that lies at the heart of our multi-disciplinary association.

EAGE 2020

Annual Conference & Exhibition Online

2020 has seen many drawbacks for the world and the oil & gas industry. However, it brought to light many opportunities as well. EAGE offered its members the first ever edition of the EAGE Annual Conference & Exhibition Online! Over 2,000 delegates rejoiced online for our flagship event. The essence of the traditional conference was maintained by organising a large Technical Programme with live Q&A sessions and an Online Exhibition where company representatives were present to interact with delegates and share their latest developments throughout the past year.

The event programme saw the additional of a wide range of Community Activities dedicated not only to our large audience but also to students to help their career advancements. The extraordinary Opening Ceremony and the EAGE Forum Sessions featured key industry leaders that addressed the most critical aspects and current themes affecting the geosciences today.

In short, the EAGE Annual Online kept the conversation going and offered a place for peers to rejoice and meet once again, though under a different format than normal.

Local Chapters

Local Chapters were active throughout 2020, helping members to stay connected and learn more about the opportunities offered by the Association. By converting their activities to new online formats, they were able to grow and activate new collaborations. In total 47 community events were organized, including ā€œEnergy Transition in the North Sea – A Sea of Opportunitiesā€ (2 and 21 October 2020) involving 5 Local Chapters and the EAGE special interest community on Decarbonization & Energy Transition.

Education

Education is key to EAGEā€™s mission to promote the development and application of geosciences and engineering. Since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, online education has seen enormous growth and hundreds of people have attended EAGE courses remotely thanks to our new online interactive formats.

In 2020 weā€™ve been working on new developments to improve and expand the EAGE online educational offerings and launched the EAGEā€™s online education platform – Learning Geoscience! The new platform gives members the possibility to follow the latest education in geoscience and engineering remotely through an integrated set of interactive, or self paced, learning tools and online courses of experienced instructors from industry and academia, as well as free learning materials, including e-lectures and webinars.

Students

Our student activities overview in 2020 is one of interruption as well as innovation. With many of our programmes traditionally emphasising networking and in-person interaction, projects had to be moved to the online realm.

We were able to successfully conclude the 2020 Laurie Dake Challenge in July, celebrating our first ever win from the Instituto Mexicano del PetrĆ³leo. In November, we concluded the Second Minus CO2 Challenge at the GET2020 conference, where IFP School from France came in first place in a tightly contested competition. Our EAGE 2020 Annual Conference & Exhibition Online had a well-received student programme and welcomed over 220 students from around the world.

New projects, such as the EAGE Student e-Summit series (7 deliveries in 2020) and online student lecture tours (12 deliveries in 2020) did not only provide a valuable alternative in 2020, but also in the years to come.

As you can see, itā€™s been quite a year. And none of this would have been possible without our loyal members.
So with the end of the year approaching, let us say:

Thanks for being with EAGE throughout 2020!

We hope that youā€™ll join us again for 2021
